Hey,
I still like the Mouse Trap idea, but we'd have to make sure to step it up perfectly so it actually works. With the umbrella thing, I know the purpose is to make this crazy set-up & it's not supposed to be something we'd actually use obviously, but if we have to tape down the umbrella it would be hard to remove from the set-up and there would be no way that it is useful. I dunno, just my thoughts. So thoughts on the write-up?

Hey group.
I definately think the umbrella might work. I get what you were saying about needing to secure it but maybe if it was taped down with some good old duct tape and secured to something stable like a chair, it might work. The wind action caused by it opening might have an effect on it too but hopefully not a big one. Maybe we could use it as a step if we dont like the final project. Like the wind from the umbrella opening then pushes something else.
Also, the setting off the mouse trap game might work but we would have to have something that winds up the trap which is hard to do.
Someone mentioned the idea of picking up a pen using a magnet which is a pretty good idea, i think. Because magnets are cheap as hell and grabbing a pen or something else thats metal might be cool.

ideas for project :)
hey group!
I had a couple of ideas for the project, as I was telling the group last night we could incorperate the lighter leash into our project, it is a retractable device with a clamp on it, it might be useful if we had someting holding whatever we put in it(it doesn't have to be a lighter) and then when it lets go it will retract and this could cause a reaction.
I was also thinking that we could incorperate the people we learn about in our class and their laws for example, Newtons Law F=MA (If something falls to cause the reaction w=mg).
Also we could use the steps of our machine to display some of the common concepts of mechanics like magnets, pulleys, springs,tension,torque,etc... and include this stuff in our final write up to give it some depth.
I think the final goal of the machine should be something that will easily be set off so that the machine will work everytime.....what about a machine that adds cream and sugar to your coffee? :)

Hey,
I was thinking and looking at Rube Goldberg machines and here are some ideas for the final end point and some steps
Final End Point
1. Opening an umbrella- this would be easy because all you would have to do is get one of those umbrellas that you press the button and it shoots open. And then all you would need to do is have something press the button or fall on the button.
2. Knocking down some dominos - this could be done with a marble or something like that which could be sent down a little slide
Some steps that i thought of:
-send a marble down a slide which hits the domino (or something like that) that releases a string connected to a heavy object which falls onto something (could be a button or could be that pottery wheel)

Okay, I've given you all admin privaliges and whatnot... Looks like we can add pictures nicely now too; woo!
So, anyone have a revelation yet about what we want our final thing to be?
I had a crazy idea when I accidentally slept in today, haha.
What about having something that hits the snooze button of your alarm when you move your arm or something in your sleep? Then you don't have to roll over and hit the button; you just move your arm (which is tied up with a string) and with pulleys and stuff, hits stuff which moves things and other cool stuff here, which then hits the snooze button on your alarm clock?
Ashley, if you're reading, your email is aromero, right? I just sent another, another invite; so if you got it, cool, if not did I get your email wrong from the sheet?
Oh and I put it that all of us (except for Professor Ruane) get emails every time one of us posts, since I most of us won't be able to check and see if someone else posted everyday. woo.

It's totally my bad for not putting this up earlier, the internet's been fluxing alot in CV and I forgot in the midst of the exams and other HW I had due today; sorry guys.
Anyway, we're still on for friday, right? 3:00pm at the clock tower for goodwill? Reply here or call me if you can't go right when you know. We should be back in time for the fair, by the way, since nearly all of us are in it.
Very niiiiice.
